Baptism

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a sacred and outward expression of an inward spiritual reality—an act of obedience and public declaration that signifies a person’s identification with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a profound and symbolic moment in the life of a believer, marking their entry into the community of faith and the ongoing journey of discipleship.

At its core, baptism is rooted in the work of God. It does not earn salvation but bears witness to the grace that has already been received through faith. It proclaims that a person has been made new in Christ—that the old has gone, and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). It represents dying to sin and being raised to new life, echoing the death and resurrection of Jesus and affirming the believer’s trust in His saving work.

Baptism also signifies belonging. It is more than an individual act—it connects the baptized to the global and historic body of Christ. As one is immersed in water and brought back up, they are welcomed into the family of God, embraced by a community that commits to walk with them in love, accountability, and spiritual growth.

Though baptism is a physical act, it carries deep spiritual meaning. It is a sign of surrender, a testimony of faith, and a step of obedience. Jesus Himself was baptized, not because He needed to be cleansed, but to identify with humanity and to model faithfulness. When believers follow His example, they are aligning their lives with His way, choosing to live under His lordship and participate in His mission in the world.

Ultimately, baptism is a beautiful and powerful reminder that we are not our own—we have been claimed by grace, cleansed by mercy, and commissioned to live as followers of Jesus. It is a beginning, not an end—a declaration that we are part of God's redemptive story, continuing to be shaped by His Spirit as we grow in faith, love, and service.
